Being involved in a car accident can be a frightening experience. You might feel shaken and unsure of what to do. However, there are a few steps you can take to ensure that you remain safe and that you are compensated for any damages that may have occurred.
Pull Off the Road
If your car is still able to move under its own power, try to move it over to the side of the road. Turn on your hazard lights to let other drivers know there is a problem.
Do Not Admit Fault
No matter the details of the accident, do not admit fault to the other driver. You should not discuss any specifics with anyone but the police, including the following:
- Which car struck which vehicle
- What you were doing at the time of the crash (talking to a passenger, adjusting your radio, etc.)
- How bad you believe the damage to be
Take Photos of Your Car
If you can do so safely, take photos of the damage to your vehicle and send them to your insurance company. Having photos can help you prove who might have been at fault later on, especially if it is not immediately apparent at the time of the wreck.
